ST.XAVIER’S JESUIT RESIDENCE, THUMBA, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Roman Catholic religious order of clerks regular, whose members commonly known as Jesuits constitute the largest male religious order in Catholic Church. Jesuits priests and brothers are engaged in ministries in 112 nations on six continents and are best known in the fields of education, intellectual research and cultural pursuit. St.Xavier’s Jesuit Residence, Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram is designed as the residing place for Jesuit priests teaching in the nearby St.Xavier’s College. The design dynamically balances the outward nature of Jesuit priests as well as the human tendency of privacy and calmness .The semi public areas like chapel, parlour, dining room and library were positioned to the corners of the building with residential rooms sandwiched in between. A central courtyard and adjoining verandahs plays a crucial role in controlling the sea side climate and cutting down the glare. The service core was properly placed around a second courtyard adjacent to the dining room with servant rooms to the periphery. The openness necessary to such an architectural scheme is made possible by the absence of obstruction of any kind in semi public areas which once opened faces the courtyard.
